Ronald Koeman has begun hunting for players who could suit his style in the new Barcelona and among the identified ones, is Liverpool’s midfielder, Gini Wijnaldum.

The new Barca boss seems to be monitoring the Premier League champions and the Dutch player’s contract situations.

Wijnadum representatives recently approached the Reds with a reminder of the 29-year old’s contract which needs extension as it enters into its final stage. Talks have not yet begun for further commitments meanwhile, AD has reported that Koeman could take advantage of the situation.

The Dutch outlet has revealed that Ronald Koeman wants Wijnaldum to become the engineer of Barca’s midfield following a conversation with the Liverpool player not to sign a new contract.

The two have worked together in the Dutch national team having lost the Nations Cup trophy to Portugal in the finals in 2019.

Barcelona will welcome new additions to the squad after few names were mentioned by the club president as candidates willing to be given the opportunity, with the rest not secured in the near future at Barca. This means the new boss is on alert for talented players at affordable prices due to the financial constraint caused by the coronavirus on clubs.

The 29-year old would leave Anfield on a cut-price if he accepts to work with his former national team boss.

A pre-contract agreement could also be agreed from January if Klopp’s side fails to let Wijnaldum leave for cheap, which would be a loss for the Champions.

Gini is on pre-season with Liverpool ahead of the upcoming season.

The 29-year old has made 179 appearances in the Premier League since joining the Merseyside club, scoring 25 goals and providing 16 assists.

He has won the Premier League, Champions League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup title with the Reds since his £25m move from Newcastle in 2016.
