In Ukraine, the head of a hamlet near Bucha was killed together with his family.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russian forces killed a village chief, her husband, and her kid. This, along with the finding of five men dressed in civilian clothes, has added to the mounting evidence of atrocities in Ukraine. Yogita Limaye of the BBC went to see the two scenes.

The tragedy of what occurred during the Russian occupation is finally coming to light in the town of Bucha, just outside of Kyiv.

Five victims lay crushed on the ground in the basement of a building that had housed a children's community center - five men dressed in civilian clothing, their hands bound behind their backs.    Some people were shot in the head, while others were wounded in the chest. The men have yet to be named, but Ukrainian officials say they were kidnapped and slain by the Russian military.

Vlad, one of the volunteers who carried the bodies up from the basement, claimed, "We heard them being shot." "We heard mines detonate nearby. Mines are all around us. We are fortunate to be alive."

Vlad recalled hearing a husband calling for his wife as she walked out into the street to grab some water, followed by a barrage of gunshots. Later, he discovered that the husband and the wife had died. "I have so many stories to tell you, but I don't want to," he added. "I'd like to forget about them."      Four victims were in a small grove in the woods near the town of Motoyzhyn. Olha Sukhenko, 51, her husband Igor, and her 25-year-old son Oleksander have all been identified.

Olha was the village's leader. She and her family are thought to have been slain on suspicion of assisting Ukrainian soldiers, and their bodies were dumped on the edge of the woods, half-buried, with Olha's hand and her son's face visible through the soil.

On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky paid a visit to Bucharest. "We want you to show the rest of the world what happened in Ukraine, what the Russian military did, and what the Russian Federation did in a peaceful country.

You needed to recognize that these were ordinary people "he stated.

He stated that Ukraine was still willing to talk to Russia. He told the BBC that Ukraine "deserves peace." "We cannot continue to live in a state of conflict. Every day, our army fights, but we don't want millions of people to perish. That is why we must have a conversation with Russia."

There were tales of a mass grave being dug somewhere in Bucha to accommodate bodies from the overcrowded morgue. Dead civilians were seen with their wrists tied behind their backs in images and video footage. On Monday, evidence of heinous atrocities in this once quiet community grew by the hour.

At least 300 citizens were killed, according to the mayor, Anatoliy Fedoruk. There has yet to be an official tally. Russia has denied any involvement, alleging that all of the visual evidence was fabricated, but its claims have elicited widespread condemnation. One long route into Bucha was littered with its broken-down, burned-out tanks.

Some of what transpired here, just west of Kyiv, is now known. However, there are still several cities and towns in Ukraine that remain under Russian authority. The concern is that what was discovered here will be replicated elsewhere, with additional victims discovered in basements and shallow graves.
