Luka Modric has uttered that Barcelona will still be one of the best clubs in the world if Messi leaves.

The Croatian compared the Blaugranas situation to Ronaldo’s departure from Madrid in 2018 reflecting that it would be a huge loss yet the club will recover just as Los Blancos players pulled through when Ronaldo departed.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner spent nine years in the Spanish capital before leaving for Turin in 2018 in a £100m deal.

"It would be a huge loss, like when Cristiano left," Modric told AFP.

"But you can't think about the past. It's football and that's it.

"If it happens it will be a huge loss for the prestige of the league.

"But we need to go forward. Other players will become stars.

"When Cristiano left, the same thing happened; the life of Real Madrid went on without him and it will be the same for Barcelona and LaLiga without Messi ."

Messi after almost two decades at the Camp Nou is determined to part ways with Barcelona and ply his trade in a different league, speculated to be the Premier League.

The 33-year old Argentine’s decision to leave Barcelona has been branded as disloyalty towards the club for the reason that he still has a year on his current contract.

Although his future is in his hands as a player, yet according to Sergio Ramos, doing it the best way is important.

"It's a topic that we're putting to one side," Ramos told the press when asked about Messi.

"He's earned the right to decide his future, but I don't know if it's the best way.

"For Spanish football, for Barcelona and for us, we'd like him to stay.

"Leo makes the Spanish league, his team, and the Clasicos better.

"You always like beating the best and he's one of the best in the world."
