Deputy President William Ruto won the presidential election last week with 50.5% of the vote, according to the head of Kenya's electoral commission, Wafula Chebukati, on August 15.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was his main competitor, received 48.8% of the vote.

Less than 1% of the vote was cast for each of the other two candidates.

There had been hectic scenes at the tallying headquarters immediately before the result was announced as some of Mr. Odinga’s supporters sought to try and disrupt the proceedings

Before the announcement was made, four of the seven electoral commissioners for the nation left, claiming they could not participate in the "opaque" process.

Mr. Ruto promised to work for all Kenyans in his acceptance address, claiming that the election process was "the most transparent ever" in Kenya.

The results should be declared "null and void," Mr. Odinga argued the next day, citing anomalies.

On August 22, Mr. Odinga filed complaints with the Supreme Court, saying that there had been a premeditated attempt to change the result.

The judges are anticipated to decide after hearing the arguments from the various parties.
