Hortifresh organizes Workshop for Mango Farmers

The program director for HortiFresh Mrs Sheila Osei Asibey Yeboah stated that the Bono East region has been identified as the biggest hub for the cultivation of mangoes in the country hence the need for the workshop with similar already organized at Nkoranza, Kintampo, Wenchi and Sunyani.

A Non-governmental Organization, HortiFresh with funding from the Holland government has organized educational work for mango farmers in the Bono East region.

The workshop was aimed at educating the farmers on the need for mango cultivation on large scale, the economic benefits associated with mango farming and nutritional benefits to its consumers should produce more mangoes and also the economic benefits that they will benefits to the farmers and the consumers.

The workshop which took place at the forecourt of the Bonokyempem Hall was attended by all agriculture actors i.e certification officers, input dealers, irrigation officers, solar irrigation officers, processors and mango farmers.

The occasion was graced by the presence of the Akwamuhene of the Techiman Traditional Council, Nana Owusu Agyare II.

The program director for HortiFresh Mrs Sheila Osei Asibey Yeboah stated that the Bono East region has been identified as the biggest hub for the cultivation of mangoes in the country hence the need for the workshop with similar already organized at Nkoranza, Kintampo, Wenchi and Sunyani.

She said her outfit is aimed at creating a sustainable partnership among the farmers and the processors as they have created platforms for such opportunities. 

The Bono East Regional Agriculture Director, Cecilia Kaja Agyemang, advised the mango farmers to get familiarize with the Good Agriculture Practices (GAPs) and make good use of them to get the best out of their sweat while harvesting enough produce. 

He cautioned them to always use the right planting distance while planting their mango seedlings and abreast themselves with the latest technologies associated with mango farming. 

Nana Owusu Agyare II, the Akwamuhene of Techiman Tradition council on his part urged HortiFresh to support the government in its quest to make Ghana green by helping the farmers to plant many mangoes because Techiman and its environs have a very vast land that can be used in planting many varieties of trees. 

He advocated for the planting of cashews and mangoes in and around the erstwhile Brong Ahafo region in fulfilling the government's Green Ghana Project which will, in turn, generate revenue for the country.

Nana Owusu Agyare II also urged the youth of Techiman and the nation as a whole to involve themselves in mango cultivation as it has a great tendency of bridging the gap between unemployment.
