Before their car caught fire, three more people were kidnapped.

South-eastern Anambra state was the scene of the assault. A search and recovery effort is under progress.

There were no US citizens in the convoy, and nothing was known about the convoy's whereabouts in the state.

That the convoy entered the state "without recourse to the police in the area or any security agency" was regrettable, according to a spokesperson for the Nigerian state police.

The US claimed that its presence at Nigeria's mission was collaborating with local security agencies to look into the event.

The US State Department stated that "the security of our personnel is always paramount, and we take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field."
