Following his arrest last week in Tanzania, a South African rapist and murderer who fled prison was brought back to the nation on Thursday morning.

Last May, Thabo Bester faked his own death in a fire and hid a body in his cell before escaping from custody.

Along with his famous medical girlfriend Nandipha Magudumana, he was detained.

The two arrived in a chartered aircraft at an airport outside of Johannesburg's business center.

Senior officials have informed BBC reporter Pumza Fihlani that they will be placed under close police surveillance.

Plans are being made for Bester to serve his life sentence for murder in a maximum security prison while also getting ready for a court appearance on new charges for his egregious prison break with his girlfriend.

He was found guilty of raping and killing his model girlfriend Nomfundo Tyhulu in 2012.

He had been convicted of raping and robbing two other women a year earlier.
