Ex-president who was convicted returns

Blaise Compaoré, the former leader of Burkina Faso, has returned home following a seven-year exile.

According to the administration, he is there to speak with the military junta as part of efforts at reconciliation.

Photographs of the return have been tweeted by one journalist.

As punishment for his part in the death of Thomas Sankara, the country's independence leader, during the coup that put him in office 35 years ago, Compaoré was given a life sentence in absentia in April of this year.

Now that Compaoré is back in Burkina Faso, it is unclear if he will face legal proceedings.

Attorneys for Mr. Sankara's family have demanded his arrest.
