Chad's leader signs peace deal with rebel groups

Mahamat Idriss Déby, the military leader of Chad, has reached a peace agreement with more than 40 opposition organizations to open the way for a national forum later this month.

After several months of mediation by Qatar, the accord was concluded in Doha.

However, the Front for Change and Concord in Chad (also known as Fact), the largest rebel group, refused to ratify the agreement.

It had requested Mr. Déby exclude himself from running for office.

After his father, Idriss Déby, died battling rebels on the front lines, he assumed control of the nation the following year.

In October, there will be elections.
