Emirates to suspend flights to Nigeria

Due to its inability to retrieve its funds from Nigeria, Emirates airline has announced that it will stop operating flights to Nigeria from the beginning of September.

According to the Reuters news agency, the issue has arisen because Nigeria restricts access to foreign exchange.

Government comment has not yet been made.

Emirates stated in a statement that it has "taken significant steps to commence dialogue with the necessary authorities for their quick assistance to help establish a workable solution.

"It is disappointing that no progress has been made."

To "avoid future losses and influence on our operation expense," flights will cease as of September 1.

In June, the International Air Transport Association said that Nigeria was not handing over $450m (£370m) owed to various airlines, Reuters says.

Emirates said it could reconsider its decision “should there be any positive developments in the coming days”.

Affected travelers can get refunds for their tickets, it added.
