The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has blocked public access to the entire voters register, made available via a google drive link, following growing backlash.

The commission is yet to give an explanation for its decision to restrict access to the electoral roll.

Following the emergence of the link on Friday, November 20, displaying details of the over 17,029,981 registered voters, the EC has been criticized for breaching the privacy of electorates.

Some IT experts described the move as “very irresponsible” because the details of each voter have been made available for anyone who has ulterior motives.

Fraudsters could use the details to register a SIM card for illegal activities.

The data could also be used to impersonate individuals for banking transactions and social media activities and other harmful cyber activities.

Experts suggested that the EC show have rather created a portal where each voter will enter his ID number to access his or her details and very privately.
