DR Congo suspends Rwandan television channels

The local branch of satellite television provider CANAL+ has been asked by the Democratic Republic of the Congo's media watchdog to remove Rwandan stations from its bouquet of broadcasts there.

The regulator, CSAC RDC, stated in a statement that the suspension will last for 90 days and might be extended under certain conditions.

The Chronicles website states that Kinshasa accuses Rwandan broadcasters of encouraging civil disobedience among other things.

The news site says that the CANAL+ bouquet features roughly ten Rwandan TV stations, including the state broadcaster RBA, that broadcast news and discussion programs concerning the continuing conflict in eastern DR Congo.

Rwanda is charged with supporting the M23 rebel group in the country's east by the DR Congo, the US, and UN experts.

The turmoil in the mineral-rich eastern DR Congo has been attributed to the Congolese government, which Rwanda has disputed.
