Dormaa: Tomato farmers call for a stable price

Tomato farmers at Badukrom in Dormaa Municipality of Bono Region have called on the government to as a matter of urgency pay particular attention to the production of the vegetable in the country.

They maintained that they are suffering losses since the price of tomato is not stable as buyers dictate the price, with the attendant adverse effect on them.

The farmers urged the government to be committed to building the local capacity of tomato producers to enable the country to compete with other producing countries.

Tomato is mostly produced in seven out of the 16 regions in Ghana namely Upper East, Northern, Brong, Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra and Volta.

Tomato farming is a major agricultural activity in Ghana with a production of  400,000 metric tonnes but consumption is way above that, making it a very profitable venture but with its own challenges.

The challenges include poor road network, lack of proper rainfall pattern and access to water as well as a stable pricing system.
