Current power outages not due to lack of funds - Energy Minister
Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has dismissed claims that Ghana's recent power outages  is due to debt and other financial challenges.

“I think the issue of financial challenges doesn’t even come in here because they are doing the project, we can all see it, so where does finance come in?”

He made this remark  when he toured the Ghana GRID Company Limited (GRIDCo).

The Minister on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, inspected the improvement works on GRIDCo infrastructure starting from Tema.

Addressing journalists during the tour, Dr Opoku Prempeh says the current power outages had nothing to do with lack of funds.

He also slammed some section of Ghanaians calling the current energy challenges ‘dumsor’.

He said such labeling is disingenuous because what is happening is not dumsor as experienced by Ghanaians under John Mahama.

“We should all be sincere and truthful in our communication. In 2016, the whole country was given periods when we are to receive power and when to be off. In 2016, the government of the day told us it was a generation problem. Even the opposition then said government did not have money to buy fuel to power the generators. This is not a generation problem, this is not about fuel so how can we call it ‘Dumsor’?”
