Crash leaves 23 dead during   church trip

During a church trip, a lorry collapsed on a route in northern Zambia, killing at least 23 ladies and injuring many more.

Six more were pronounced dead when they arrived at a nearby clinic, while seventeen people passed away there and then.

The United Church of Zambia's Women's Christian Fellowship organization was involved in the accident that occurred on Sunday in the Nama district.

51 people were riding in the lorry. The driver was hurt but managed to survive.

According to the state-owned Times of Zambia newspaper, police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga claimed that the motorist was fast and had trouble negotiating a bend.

While in New York for the UN General Assembly, President Hakainde Hichilema sent his condolences to the victims' families.

"We are devastated to hear the dreadful news of the [women] who died in a car accident in the early hours of this morning," he posted on his Facebook page.
