Covid-19: WHO to Probe Ghana’s Peak Infection Rate Claims

Contrary to predictions, Ghana has seen a recent spike in Covid-19 cases

Covid-19: WHO to Probe Ghana’s Peak Infection Rate Claims

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it will probe further into Ghana’s claim of reaching the peak of its infection rate curve for Covid-19.

The peak, as suggested by the Akufo-Addo government generally meant the country would see a significant decline in the trend of covid-19 cases.

The claim first made by Director General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Patrick Aboagye, has been rejected by some analysts who have pointed at the recent sharp rise in cases.

Speaking at the WHO Africa media leader briefing on COVID-19, WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Matshidiso Moeti said although Ghana’s aggressive testing for the disease is commendable, there is a need to probe the claim of peaking.

“What we’re predicting now is that, we might reach a peak at a slower pace but at a lower level of cases in countries. And we will need to look with the Ghana health authorities and their data and see the conditions, trends and the basis for which they’re saying that they have peaked,” she said.

On May 7, 2020, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) released some graphs to back its claims that the country had reached her peak of COVID-19 cases.

However, since the announcement, Ghana covid-19 cases have increased by 3,016, from 2,719 to 5,735.
