The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for a lockdown in parts of the Greater Accra and the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Nana Addo announced the decision on late Friday, March 27, 2020 whiles addressing the Nation on the updates of the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessary policies government is putting in place to restrain the spread.

Ghana has 137 confirmed cases with 4 deaths and one recovery and per the constitutional mandate of the president to protect the citizens of Ghana, parts of Accra and Kumasi have been disclosed to be on lockdown from Monday, March 30, 2020.

“The oath of office I swore on February 2017 demands that I dedicate myself to the service of Ghanaian people. It is my job to protect you and I am determined to do just that. All what the government is doing is seeking to achieve five targets…. we have succeeded in stopping the importation of the disease into the country.

The president also cautioned that, “there shall be, during this period, no intercity movement of vehicles and aircrafts for private or commercial purposes for the areas of the restrictive measures, except for vehicles and aircrafts providing essential services and those cargo”.

“Riders of motor bikes are not allowed to carry any additional person, all intra city passenger vehicles, such as trotros and taxis, must reduce the number of passengers in order to observe appropriate social distancing and hygiene protocols,” he added.

According to Nana Akufo-Addo, the affected areas, and, indeed, all other regions have ear-marked designated isolation and treatment centers for the management of suspected and confirmed cases, as well as the selection of facilities for mandatory quarantine is being carried out.
