Covid-19: Cases Worldwide Surpass 5 Million

The global case count of the coronavirus disease has surpassed fived million, according to data collated by John Hopkins University.

Per the latest update, the worldwide total tally stands at 5,011,467.

The death toll has also risen significantly to 328,368.

Meanwhile in Africa, covid-19 cases has spike to 95,201 as of May 20, 2020, according to the Africa Union – Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (AU-CDC).

The death toll in the region stands at 2,997.

Per the update, Northern Africa are the worst hit by the virus with 30,149 cases and 1,496 deaths.

While Central Africa are the least hit with 9,353 cases and 304 death.

n related developments, a top US scientist has said that governments should not count on a successful vaccine being developed anytime soon, according to a Reuters report. 

However the scientist, William Haseltine, said the virus could still be controlled without an effective vaccine by identifying infections, finding contacts who had been exposed and isolating them.

He also urged people to wear masks, wash their hands, clean surfaces and keep a safe distance from one another.
