According to authorities, a hunter who presumably thought the Chinese man was a hare shot and killed him.

Wang Moujin drowned in a ditch after being shot in the head with an air gun, and four persons have been detained in connection with his death.

The event happened on Friday night last week while the four were out hunting in Jiangxi's Shaxi Town.

Gun-related incidents are uncommon in China.

One of the men opened fire after spotting motion in the grass next to the ditch, where Mr. Wang was reportedly fishing, according to police from the Xinzhou district.

The four guys, some of whom are reported to be in their 30s, were then taken into custody after authorities were called to the site. The inquiries continue.

Mr. Wang had drowned, according to an autopsy.

The strongest gun rules in the world, including ones that include toy or replica weapons, are found in China.

Chinese social media has seen a lot of discussion over the incident. One Weibo user asked, "How is it possible that people have guns in this country?"

Another person remarked, "I thought this was some US news."

Gun ownership in China is mainly limited to the armed forces, law enforcement, and security professionals, despite hunting licences being provided.

However, the Xinzhou police declared in a statement that they will strictly prosecute offenses involving explosives and guns. Currently, a three-year nationwide effort against these offenses is underway in China.
