Residents of Wenchiki, a farming community in the Chereponi District of the North East Region have been hit with a severe water crisis.

The lack of potable water Wenchiki is draining their pocket and exposing the people in the area to potential water-borne diseases.

The residents struggle to search for and sometimes spend most part of the day in search of water for domestic use.

In most rural communities in the Northern Region, streams and dams are the only sources of water. However, during the dry season, these water bodies dry up, leaving residents to walk long distances to access water.

Residents of the Wenchiki community are no strangers to this phenomenon. The community is without a dam, and the only source of water there is a borehole which normally dries up during the dry season.

The chief of the area, Nana Abubakar Awuffor said “it is very pathetic; my people keep fighting every day all because of the water problem in the area. We don't know what to do again, over five thousand residents in my community depend on one borehole because there's no other sources of water to drink, bath.”

Speaking in an interview with Soireenews.com via telephone call on Monday 22, 2021, Nana Abubakar noted that although the Northern Region is known for its perennial water crisis, particularly during the dry season, the situation at Wenchiki has become terrible.

The chief indicated that all efforts to get the attention of the authorities to help solve their water crises yielded no positive results therefore he is calling on philanthropists and stakeholders to assist the school.
