As the world Commemorates Tourism Day, the Bono Regional Boss for the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr Joseph Appiagyei is calling on the Ghana government to consider supporting sectors investors financially to help boost it.

According to him, the sector has been affected hugely by the pandemic with some even collapsing hence the need for the government’s support to revive them.

World Tourism Day is observed on September 27, 2021, every year to raise awareness about covering the social, cultural, political, and economic contribution of tourism towards gaining the Sustainable Development Goals.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tourism sector has been completely affected both in developed and developing countries.

The reduction in the cost of transport has led to the constant growth of tourism.

As per the United Nations (UN), one out of every 10 individuals belong to the tourism sector and, in some countries, it contributes a significant amount to their GDP.

The right to holidays is one of the provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human rights which has supported development by achieving uninterrupted growth despite the challenges faced by it.

The day was first commemorated in 1980 by the UNWTO General Assembly at the third session in Torremolinos, Spain in September 1979.

The timing falls at the end of the high season in the northern hemisphere and the beginning of the season in the southern hemisphere.

The day is celebrated on the anniversary of the adoption of the statutes of the Organization in 1970 for creating a route for the establishment of UNWTO after five years. Since then, World Tourism Day is observed each year.

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is accountable for the promotion of responsible, sustainable, and universally accessible tourism across the globe. UNWTO secures part of the sector along with the communities, minorities, and young people who are at risk.

This day's focal point is based on 'Tourism for inclusive growth.

The current theme of inclusive growth pays importance to inclusive recovery and no one is left behind in this sector. It also ensures preserving and promoting the cultural heritage of the travel industry.
