Josep Bartomeu has stepped down as the president of FC Barcelona, Marca has confirmed.

He tended in his resignation on Tuesday evening together with his board ahead of the vote of no confidence which was set to be held at the beginning of November.

The Barcelona president who succeeded Joan Laporta in January 2014 stressed on Monday that stepping down has never been an option for him as he believes in the current project with Lionel Messi as its pillar and several prodigious players alongside him.

"It never crossed my mind to resign," Bartomeu told the press.

"The project is very interesting with young players and experienced ones, like [Lionel] Messi.

Although Messi is with the team to serve the remaining 12 months of his contract yet panic has grown among the fans and other stakeholders that he would opt for a move next season should Bartomeu still be president.

The Spanish news outlet further revealed that the change of heart came when the Catalan government and the PROCICAT announced on Tuesday that the vote could take place, despite the coronavirus measures in place in the city.
