Awukugua State has officially declared independence from the Akuapem Paramountcy, citing a need to reclaim its historical autonomy. The state announced it will no longer recognize the authority of Akropong.

Awukugua State in the past organized a delegation to Akyem Abuakwa to ask for their assistance to fight the Akwamu people who were terrorizing the Okere and Larteh people on the mountain.

The same help was sought from the Ga people, the Krobos and in the war with Akwamu the Europeans at the coast at the time also joined in the war against the Akwamu people because they were also being terrorized by the Akwamu.

After the war and Akwamu was defeated, everyone left except the Akyem people who decided to stay.

They are today the Akropong people. As time went by and through education the Akropong people created Paramountcy through the help of the colonial government at the time and used it to rule over the Okere and Larteh people.

Despite all the resistance, the colonial government was backing the Akropong people so it became difficult to get rid of the Paramountcy being held by the Akropong people.

Today, the same Awukugua State which organized and led the team to get rid of the Akwamu people have decided not to be under the rule of Akropong.

The fact remains that Akropong people are settlers on the Okere and Larteh lands which is today known as Akuapem mountain. It is unthinkable that a settler should be the ruler of the natives forever.

Awukugua has stopped it and reversed that abnormality. It is now up to the other Okere States such as Dawu, Apirede, Abiri, Abonse, Adukrom and Aseseeso to also declare their independence since they are all independent communities from each other.
