Mikel Arteta has admitted that Arsenal’s 3-0 loss to Aston Villa on Sunday night is ‘his fault’ and is totally accountable for the consequence of his team.

Bukayo Saka's own goal in the first half before Ollie Watkins brace in three minutes gave Dean Smith’s side all the points to win each of their first three away league games in a season for the first time in the club's history.

Villa have moved to the sixth spot on 15 points, three clear of Arsenal at 11 and per the manager, the fight against Villa was lost from the start of the game.

“I don't feel like we were the team we're supposed to be, we performed below our standards, our ability and I didn't see the spirit for the first time that I have seen every day in training and every day when we compete,” Arteta said.

“This is totally my fault, it is why I am here, I am responsible for that, to make sure the team performs and competes at the highest level every three days. Today I haven't done that, so obviously it is my fault,” he added.

Thomas Partey was forced off the game at the initial stage of the second half due to injury. He was the only Gunners players to register a shot on target in the first half and was replaced by Dani Ceballos. The 29-year-old is likely to miss international duty for the Black Stars for the African Cup of Nations qualification against Sudan home and away on the 12 and 17 November 2020 respectively.

Arteta updated that the extent of the Ghanaian’s injury would be known on Monday through a scan.

“We have to scan him tomorrow or the day after and see what he felt straight away. Let's wait and see what the magnitude of the injury is.”
