City warmed into the game as De Bruyne tested Liverpool's mettle from set-pieces with a wicked delivery from the right. Laporte and Rodri were charged in but the ball had too much pace on it and Laporte, who was being marked by Wijnaldum went down.  A penalty shout was made but the referee just ignored it.

14 minutes to end half time, Jesus levelled the scores for the Citizens. De Bruyne’s ball for Jesus inside the box allowed the strike to turn past Alexander-Arnold and got a toe-poked finish past Alisson before Matip got across.

A handball appeal was presented after De Bruyne’s whipped ball in from the right deflected Gomez’s arm for a corner, which was slightly outstretched but there was little he could do. After VAR review, the referee awarded the spot-kick to City. De Bruyne missed from 12 yards out to end the first half.

Jesus had the best of chance in the second half when Cancelo after joining the attack spotted the forward make a dart in behind. He was only about 10 yards out in the centre of goal but his headed finish wasn't up to scratch and looped a few yards wide of the post.

Alexander Arnold was forced to end his playtime on the night with a calf muscle. James Milner took over after Shaqiri had earlier replaced Firmino.

Man City are 11th on 12 points, six points behind leaders Leicester City, while Liverpool are third and five points above Pep Guardiola's side.
