Anti-UN attacks in DR Congo may be 'war crimes'

After two UN bases in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo were attacked, the UN secretary general's office warned that any attacks on peacekeepers could be considered war crimes.

According to a spokeswoman, António Guterres requested that the Congolese government look into the occurrences, which resulted in the deaths of 12 civilians and three members of the UN.

The violence and theft of UN property, according to the peacekeeping operation Monusco, were committed by thieves posing as demonstrators.

It said that they had opened fire after taking firearms from Congolese police.

Monusco's failure to put an end to decades of warfare by armed groups operating in the mineral-rich east has caused widespread rage in Congo.
