Amansie West Small Scale Mining Association tasks government to readdress their condition of work

The Amansie West Small Scale Mining Association have launched support towards wiping out Galamsey activities by the Ghanaian government but have further called on the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to redefine their working conditions.

According to them, soldiers’ failure to differentiate between galamsey and small scale mining leading to the burning of excavators has compelled most small scale miners to vacate their sites. The decision they revealed is affecting their working capital and families and have therefore pleaded to the president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo to provide some clarification on the matter.

“We agree with Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to eradicate Galamsey from the country and we stand with him 100 per cent," the convener, Honourable Daniel Kwaku Mensah aka DKM told reporters.

“The danger it poses to our water bodies and lands is very devastating and we are ready to rally our support to fight against it. This is the job that takes care of us and our families so quitting it does not help at all.

“Our plea through the media to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo’s government to the Minister of Lands and Natural resources, Honourable Samuel Abu Jinapor, and the Minister of Defense, Honourable Dominic Nitiwul is that we have not been tasked to stop work yet the burning of excavators, be it legal and illegal grounds is frightening hence our decision to halt for now.

The Assemblymember for Moseaso Electoral Area, Honourable Daniel Kwaku Mensah disclosed that the Small Scale Mining Association is governed by laws which they comply with and per the words of Honourable Samuel Abu Jinapor, people with legally acquired concession are exempted from the wrath of the military yet innocent people machines are on the hunt and that is not the best.

“The Minister made us aware that those working on the red zone; that is concession close to water bodies and forest reserves are those they are coming after, yet why is the military burning every excavator that comes their way.

"We don’t understand and have decided to alert the government to put an end to what is going on.”

He called on the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to readdress the circumstances to which they must operate to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Galamsey task force.
