Akufo-Addo is More Interested in His Re-election than Safety of Ghanaians –Minority Leader

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu has accused the Akufo-Addo government of putting political gains over the lives of Ghanaians amid the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Tamale South Legislator “President Akufo-Addo seems more interested in his re-election than in the safety and life of Ghanaians”.

Speaking in a Party briefing on Ghana’s Covid-19 situation today [May 7, 2020], Haruna Iddrisu said the government continues to misconstrue data on covid-19 updates to suit its agenda.

He alleged that some key statistics have not been made available by the government in attempts to water down the severity of the pandemic.

“The cheap stunts designed to bolster a faltering narrative will not save us. Blatant falsehoods told to garnish the image of this administration in the face of the foreign press will not save us.

What these will do, instead, is consolidate a false sense of security in the Ghanaian public that will obscure our view of the danger we face. Indeed, false claims about low prices of local foodstuff on the market, plantain included is part of the grand scheme to create a false sense of security. Without an appreciation for the plain reality of our situation, the preventive measures will not be taken seriously. And if they are not taken seriously, we will lose this fight and we will pay a heavy price for it”.

Haruna Idddrisu said, government continues to downplay the dire extent of the pandemic despite the evident reality.

“Even now, when it is clear that we have ongoing local transmission in almost every region of this country, this government continues to downplay its extent and consequences”.

“The fact is we have almost no idea about the true scale of the problem because nearly three months into the pandemic we are still trying to formulate a testing strategy that allows us to estimate the general prevalence of COVID-19 on a timely basis” he added.

According to him, the president gambled with the lives of Ghanaians when the partial lockdown was lifted.

Ghana’s Covid-19 cases count currently stands at 3,091, over 2,000 more since President Akufo-Addo lifted the lockdown.

He opined that, the president’s decision making has always been politics versus Health, where he always chose the former.

The minority has therefore urged Ghanaians to hold President Akufo-Addo accountable to some questionable decisions made during the pandemic

The minority leader asserted that “President Akufo-Addo must take responsibility for this unfortunate turn of events”
