According to Human Rights Watch, Morocco is jailing journalists on non-political offences following shoddy trials  silence them.

According to the New York-based organization, two of the most notable instances are those of Omar Radi and Soulaimane Raissouni, who were both given prison terms of at least five years this year after being accused of sexual abuse.

Taoufik Bouachrine, another journalist, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2018 after being charged with rape and human trafficking.

All three of them have criticized the government and refuted the accusations leveled against them.

Morocco has emphasized the independence of its judiciary and the fact that the proceedings were unrelated to the journalists' reporting.
