The New Voters' Registration exercise was divisive - Hon. Muntaka

Member of Parliament for Asawase Constituency, Hon. Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka has asserted that the New Voters’ Registration exercise was conflict-ridden created to favor members of the incumbent government and make a fuss of opposition partisans from registering.

He reiterated that the agenda created by the Electoral Commission to frustrate his party members would eventually turn out in the upcoming elections following the dubious means employed to doubt the identity of some National Democratic Congress civilians in the constituency.

“The exercise has been a very difficult one. I 've been a member of parliament involved with the party right from 1992 when it started, I 've been involved with almost every registration exercise, this divisive tendency, I 've never seen any of that kind. Because you have electoral officers that were biased before they got to the station.

“The number of challenges was much and over 1,200 people were challenged here. Fortunately, we went to the tribunal, they’ve been able to receive their cards with the exception of just a few. We are sure what will be left will not be up to 150. We succeeded in making sure that those who were accused of not resident here were able to prove it,” he said.

In a press briefing after a meeting of appreciation to the National Democratic Party faithful in his constituency on Tuesday, August 11, 2020, the 49-year old condemned the ill action of some police officers for arresting people without any cause expecting that many of their spirits will be down.

According to Hon. Muntaka, some electoral officers were remunerated to renounce the personality of residents in the Asawasi Constituency only for the tribunal to intervene and probe before the majority of the alleged were allowed to register.

“They paid people from the same area to deny the identity of known residents. When that happens, it creates tension in this community but we keep telling them that look, we know why they are doing this… so that they will be violent and then the process will stop.

“We beg you, it’s a simple process. We beg you, it’s a simple process. Even I the sitting MP can be challenged but when we get to the tribunal, it will be him or her who will have to prove not me so I don’t have anything to worry.

“If it is the convenience and the inconvenience of getting you there, we will provide busses that will collect people to the tribunal and back. My executives are here, we have to feed people to be able to take them there.

He cautioned the government to avoid a repeat of what happened at the Ayawaso West Wagon especially in the upcoming elections.

“If you look at what happened in the Volta region, Banda, Kasoa, nothing can describe this exercise than been a divisive register. I believe they only created the sword that they are going to fall in. when you come to Aboabo Bola bola. I know a lot of people there who challenge so blindly, to the extent of challenging your own.

“This register believes me, for a constituency like ours, for almost 1200 people to go through tribunal is very divisive and intimidating. In the very beginning, I kept telling you that we have not learnt from what happened in Ayawaso West Wagon.”
