Following Zimbabwe's inclusion on the World Health Organization's "red list," which is reserved for nations with severe health personnel issues, the UK last month stopped hiring Zimbabwean healthcare professionals.

Zimbabwe to criminalise foreign recruitment of medics

Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga has stated that Zimbabwe intends to pass legislation making it illegal for other nations to hire its medical professionals.

The loss of medical specialists, according to Mr. Chiwenga, who is also the minister of health, is comparable to human slavery.

He declared that those he accused of depriving the country of its human resources would face harsher punishments.

"Recruiting people with the intent to harm the nation is a crime against humanity. Because there aren't enough nurses and physicians, patients are dying in hospitals. This needs to be carefully considered, Mr. Chiwenga said on Wednesday.

He continued, "Zimbabwe deplores this heinous act which is also a grave violation of human rights.

Since February 2021, more than 4,000 nurses and physicians, according to local media, have left Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwean physicians and nurses have found the National Health Service in the UK to be a desirable location due to the higher wages offered there than at home.

The Zimbabwe Medical Association estimates that there are approximately 3,500 doctors in the nation, which has a populace of 15 million.

In Zimbabwe, where there is a severe economic problem, constant inflation has decimated wages.
