Georginio Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool for Barcelona, the Sunday Times has confirmed.

The Reds player is out of contract at the end of the season and has agreed to join the Blaugranas following rumours of Ronald Koeman’s involvement since he took over in the summer.

This means Liverpool will get nothing from sales after the player failed to agree a new contract to extend his playing days at Anfield.

News surrounding the Dutchman’s departure was huge earlier but died out along the line following the Reds struggles to steady their sinking ship this season. However, Barca’s recent woes on and off the field kept the transfer talk concealed until the election of Joan Laporta. Owing to their financial challenges recently, the Spanish club thought it was a good move to lure the 30-year old into Camp Nou to strengthen Barcelona.

The arrival of Thiago Alcantara at Liverpool threatened Wijnaldum’s position as speculations developed that he is not 100 per cent secured of becoming the regular starter at Liverpool and could someday be a bench player when Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita are fully fit for the Reds.

Wijnaldum since arriving from Saint James Park has won the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup and Super Cup.

He is remembered most for his quick brace against Barcelona at Anfield two seasons ago in the Premier League when the Reds overturned a 3-0 scoreline to qualify to the finals of the European cup competition.
