What happened to Mahsa Amini?

As soon as she was taken into custody in Tehran, rumours started to surface that she had been struck in the head inside a police van.

What happened to Mahsa Amini?

Mahsa Amini, 22, was stopped and detained by Iran's morality police on September 13 while she and her brother Kiarash were standing by a highway in Tehran, the country's capital.

Mahsa was accused of wearing her hijab (headscarf) improperly.

Later, Kiarash claimed he was informed that his sister will be released following an hour-long "education class."

Iranian authorities released Amini's name for the first time two days after the arrest, claiming that she had been unwell owing to "heart difficulties" that manifested "suddenly" in a morality police office.

She was "immediately" brought to the hospital, according to the police. Doctors reportedly told Amini's family that while her heart was still beating, her "brain was not awake anymore."

She was declared deceased the following day.

Her relatives said that she was a healthy young woman free of any illnesses that would have caused sudden cardiac trouble.

As soon as she was taken into custody in Tehran, rumors started to surface that she had been struck in the head inside a police van.

The allegations have been repeatedly refuted by police.

Her demise followed a string of allegations that Iranian officials had brutally treated women.
