Yam farmers in the Northern Region have called for recognition by the government of Ghana.

Yam farmers in the Northern Region have raised concerns to the government to find a way to support them in a season like drought where the germination is very poor due to the dryness and dwindled yam production, unlike other farm products.

 "We are been neglected, and there is no support for us neither a scaled price as other products are always captured in the national budget, meanwhile, yams are also part of food crops that serves as the backbone of the country," One farmer said.

They complained about the difficulties they encounter in Yam production where the concerns of the Agricultural departments are not much based on them, unlike other crops where they visit varieties of seeds and new methods of farming.

William Ntapoan the secretary to Yam Farmers Association GABA  lamented on the worsening condition of Yam production and appealed to the government and Agriculture department to also get in touch with them with new methods of yam farming.

Hajia Hawa Musah Acting Regional Director of Agriculture emphasized how the drought-affected productivity in the Region and can lead to famine if much care is not taken.

She also assured the farmers that, the Agriculture Ministry and the Regional Minister will ensure that new and better methods of Yams production are introduced to boost their farming activities.
