Jota celebrates goal with Minamino

Liverpool have recorded back to back wins in their Champions’ League for the first time after 2-0 win over Midtjylland at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Two second-half goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah gave the Reds the deserved victory to top the table following Ajax’s 2-2 with Atalanta in Germany.

Takumi Minamino started the game in a central position, with Divock Origi on the left, Xherdan Shaqiri through the middle and Diogo Jota on the right which certainly looked like a very fluid front four.

The visitors almost shocked the hosts in the 4-minute with the lead. Dreyer timed his run to perfection to latch on to a long Scholz pass from inside the Midtjylland half. He could not bring the ball under control initially however and allowed the Reds' goalkeeper to spread himself and block the low, left-footed strike.

The corner was delivered but Liverpool made a good clearance.

Fabinho had to limb off the pitch in what seemed like a hamstring which forced Jurgen Klopp to bring on Williams, who was a late substitute in the win over Ajax.

Henderson then dropped deeper since Fabinho's injury-enforced departure in an effort to offer Williams and Gomez some protection. Midtjylland looked comfortable at the back and kept frustrating the Reds defence as they failed to register a shot on target in the first half.

There was urgency from Liverpool at the start of the second half when Gini Wijnaldum was brought on for Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool captain was likely feared of being endangered after Cajuste rough tackle on the Englishman. The midfielder was assigned to operate just in front of the back four and provide options for the Reds forward.

10 minutes into the second half, Diogo Jota scored the opener and the Reds 10,000th goal in history. A quick exchange of passes on the right between Trent and Shaqiri allowed the full-back to square for the summer signing, leaving the former Wolves forward a simple finish from close range.

Klopp brought on Salah for Minamino and Mane for Origi in the 60-minute to intensify the Reds play. The visitors started to get a foothold in the contest again with Evander missing the target in the 74-minute. The substitute robbed Shaqiri on the edge of the Liverpool area but curled a right-footed effort high into the stand behind the goal. The visitors came close again through Evander who failed to bring Onyeka's pass under control at first but recovered sufficiently to turn and fire just wide of the upright, with Alisson Becker static.

Firmino missed a sitter and Dreyer later hit the side of the net to keep the heat on.

Mohamed Salah finally added the Reds second to seal the win from the spot.

The Egyptian was brought down in the box by Paulinho which gave the referee no option but to point to the spot and show the Midtjylland player a yellow card after the substitute was sent tumbling in the area. He sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to register the Reds second.
