Tunisia policemen jailed over football fan's death

Twelve police officers from Tunisia were sentenced to two years in prison for the killing of a football fan.

In 2018, 19-year-old Omar Laabidi perished in a stream while attempting to flee as police pursued a group of supporters to the stream's brink.

Before diving into the sea to flee the police, Laabidi reportedly yelled that he couldn't swim. The body of Laabidi was discovered the following day.

Witnesses claim they overheard policemen yell at him, "You simply have to learn how to swim," which has now been adopted as a social media catchphrase by those calling for justice for police abuses under the hashtag #ApprendsNager.

The victim's family has announced that they would appeal the verdict, labeling the manslaughter conviction a "charade of justice."
