Thiago Alcántara’s late goal for Liverpool made sure the Reds were within Top four reach after Mohamed Salah had earlier assisted Sadio Mané for the opener which was also the first time the duo have combined for a goal in the Premier League this season.

The Reds won against Southampton by 2-0 at Anfield to go sixth, six points off Leicester with a game in hand.

Liverpool started strongly and almost took the lead in the 10-minute by Mane couldn’t direct his shot well. It was Trent Alexander-Arnold who found the Senegalese at the edge of the box with a lovely curled ball from wide right. He took it down, found half a yard and shot on the half volley, but it flashed over Forster's bar.

The hosts created chances that could have taken them ahead but Foster was often there to rescue which kept the Reds pressing for the breakthrough.

Adams almost broke the deadlock in the 30-minute when Walcott slipped in Tella on the right, and Saints are 2 v 2. Tella squared for Adams, Alisson stayed put but stood tall to deny Adams' effort.

Mane scored for the Reds against his former club in the 31-minute for the Reds to lead after Fabinho found Salah on the right, who looked up and found Mane in the box.

He swung in a perfect cross for Mane to beat Walker-Peters and headed into the net from six yards.

There was less urgency in the second half for the Reds as Fabinho dropped slightly deeper which made both Liverpool full-backs a tad more conservative.

Southampton were close again as Adams slipped in Obafemi, Rhys Williams didn’t react to intercept, but Alisson got to the ball before Obafemi to deny him.

Thiago sealed the win in the 90-minute through Liverpool's pressing game. Substitute, Firmino robbed Walker-Peters deep in Saints territory, fed the Spaniard on the edge of the box and the midfielder angled a cracking finish into the bottom corner.

Liverpool play Manchester United on Thursday night.
