Tomato sellers at the Nana Bosoma market in Sunyani Municipality of Bono region have urged the government to extend the one village, one dam project to all tomato growing areas to serve as a source of water supply to help reduce the price of the vegetable.

They said tomatoes available in the market are brought from the various districts in the Bono and Bono East regions, where traders from other regions and other neighbouring countries like Togo also come to purchase in bulk, a competition that hikes the price.

They noted that the delay in rainfall had adversely affected the cultivation of the vegetable and appealed to the government to construct the dams to help increase tomato production in Bono and Bono East regions.

Tomato Transporters Association of Ghana in February this year embarked on strike action over the hike in tomato prices.

At some markets, traders lamented about the increasing price of tomatoes when SoireeNews visited there.

The Association said the strike, which was begun on Sunday, February 7, was due to the silence of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other authorities on robbery attacks on their members who commute to and from Burkina Faso for the produce.
