Sunyani East: Alcohol contributed 94 out of the 1,130 mental health conditions in 2021.

The Sunyani East Municipal Mental health officer,  Mr. George Gamadzi has said the Municipality recorded some 1,130 new mental health cases, with which 94 of them were as a result of Alcoholism, Schizophrenia tops with 244 new cases followed by depression which stands at 108 cases.

Speaking in an interview with Soiree news during a forum organized by the willing ways Foundation Ghana at the Sunyani Municipal health Directorate with health workers and the office of the Social welfare as the foundation is establishing a facility in Sunyani to cater for mental health patients.
Mr. Gamadzi added that the Sunyani Municipality has improved in the quest to prioritize mental health in the municipality as a result of the public education they embarked on to alley the stigma on relatives and patients to seek medical attention at the various facilities across the municipality.
Meanwhile, the Sunyani Municipal Director for Social Welfare Madam Belinda Osei Mensah said her office is embarking on the move to organize volunteers who will help in arresting, shaving, and bathing hardcore mentally challenged persons for care.

She also called on individuals and benevolent organizations to help establish centers such as what the ‘willing ways Foundation Ghana’ is doing to improve government effort which is not enough, as she called for the establishment of a hostel facility for travelers and strangers who are forced to sleep on the streets.
