The Bono Regional Health Directorate is worried over the alarming rate of stroke among the youth in the region as against the elderly.

The development according to the RHD, if not curtailed, would affect the region’s growth as the youth are gradually paralyzed by stroke annually.

Dr. Kwabena Kumi, Deputy Director, and a clinician at the Brong Ahafo Regional hospital made this known during the National Stroke Survivors Day celebration at Sunyani.

Given the statistics he revealed, about 355 people were affected by stroke in the year 2018 as against 873 in 2019. He further added that 615 persons were also affected last year.

Out of the 615, Dr. Kumi said, 98 of the number were between the ages of 35-45 years which is very alarming. Citing hypertension among other causes of stroke, he called on the youth and the general public at large to regularly walk into any health facility to get their blood pressure checked to prevent sadden contraction of same.

Dr. Kwabena Kumi further called on the youth to take serious their lifestyle and limit their alcohol intake. He also advised the public to consider what they eat as it could also result in the same.

Soiree News however engaged some of the stroke survivors who called on the government for financial support as their drugs are expensive. They also called on families and loved ones not to neglect them in such trying times.
