'Security Situation In Nigeria Worrisome' – NMA

Medical Doctors in Nigeria have condemned in strong terms the deteriorating security situation in the country.
The condemnation formed part of the resolution of the Nigeria Medical Association, (NMA) General Meeting and Scientific Conference held in Lokoja, Kogi State recently.
Briefing newsmen on Tuesday, August 17, 2021, the Kogi State chairman of NMA Dr Omakoji Simeon Oyiguh said Nigeria citizens have been living in fear across the country, stressing that medical practitioners were not spared by the hoodlums from the under world.
According to him, medical doctors have been kidnapped in their line of duties, while patients they are attending to were left to their fate in the hospital.
Oyiguh called on government at all levels to rise up to the occasion in protecting the lives and properties of its citizens, adding that they should come out with a profitable system to avoid brain drain in the medical system.
He said: “We can no longer keep quiet over the gruesome killings around the country. The government must stand up to their responsibility”.
While admitting that doctors in the country are facing numerous challenges that need to be attended to urgently, Oyiguh explained that the association will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to save lives in the State.
The chairman, however, backed the ongoing strike embarked upon by the National Association of Residents Doctors, (NARD).
He explained that doctors cannot function efficiently when their health and safety could not be guaranteed by their employers, just as he maintained that poor remunerations had led to a mass exodus of doctors out of the country.
Lamenting the poor remuneration of medical doctors in the country, Oyiguh noted that Nigeria leaders prefer going out of the country for medical tourism instead of building and investing in its health care system for the benefit of all.
On the recent upsurge of diseases outbreak such as Coronavirus, Lassa fever, Marburg virus, Oyeguh warned that all the precautionary measures must be observed by the people.
