After a scientific experiment in the classroom went awry, several children were hurt in a primary school in Sydney, Australia.

According to reports, at least two kids with severe burns were taken by ambulance to a hospital. It's thought that nine additional people had minor burns.

Initial reports indicate that methylated spirits and sodium bicarbonate were used in the experiment, according to outlet 9news.

Fire vehicles, paramedics, and helicopters were spotted arriving on the area.

At Manly West Public School, the event happened on Monday at around 12:30 local time (02:00 GMT).

Acting Superintendent of New South Wales Ambulance Phil Templemen claimed that the experiment was affected by the wind, which also scattered some of the chemicals used.

The Sydney Morning Herald said that the children, who are thought to be between the ages of 10 and 11, have burns to various parts of their body, including their face, chest, lower belly, and legs (SMH).

Additionally, a teacher had minor injury treatment.

Many parents who visited the school on Monday said they had concerns about why the experiment occurred but added that everything was "under control" at the school.

A parent at the school, Mich Ashton, told the BBC, "We heard online what happened, it was a bit worrying but everything seemed to be under control quite quickly.

Another parent, who wished to remain unnamed, described what happened as a "regular science experiment," adding that the teacher in question was "well loved."

A neighbour told the SMH that a teacher had earlier come out of the school to address a crowd that had gathered outside.

Tyson Atkins stated, "The teacher who spoke to us claimed it was a scientific project that gone awry and some chemical burns were involved."

Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, and methylated spirits are used in the Carbon Sugar Snake, a common school science experiment that can be found online.

It entails combining sugar and baking soda, drizzling a small amount of the mixture in methylated spirits-soaked sand, and lighting the mixture.

However, it is not yet clear what kind of experiment the school had conducted.
