Okada Riders Association welcomes Mahama’s promise to legalise business

The Okada Riders Association has expressed delight at a promise made by Flagbearer of NDC, John Mahama to legalise the use of motorcycles for commercial purposes when he’s re-elected as Ghana's President.

The Association said legalizing the commercial use of motorcycles (popularly known as Okada) had been a move they were expecting from government for a long time.

“It is very good news for all of us, especially us in the Okada business,” National President for the Okada Riders Association, Michael Kofi Owusu, said, as quoted by Citinewsroom.

“This is something that we have been expecting for a very long time. We are going to send this message to our people.

“We believe him [Mahama] because we realize that it is not something he is just telling us in darkness or a secret place but coming to a large platform like this for the whole nation that this is what he is going to do. We are all behind him.”

Mahama revealed his plans to legalize the okada business when he addressed some chiefs of Kpando in the Volta Region as part of his tour of the region last week.

Mahama is of the view that, the Okada business should be legalized and properly regulated as it continues to provide jobs for the youth.

According to the former president, the commercial motorcycle transit system popularly known as ‘Okada’, has created more jobs than the Akufo-Addo government’s Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) program.

The use of motorbikes and tricycles for commercial purposes in any form is currently against Ghana’s Road Traffic Regulations 2012 (L.I 2180).
