On Monday, people also vandalized a gas factory connected to Mr. Odinga and set fire to portions of a farm held by the family of the late President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Odinga-stronghold in Kenya suspends protests

Opposition demonstrations have been put on pause in Kisumu, a county in western Kenya and the hometown of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

Instead, demonstrators, according to Governor Anyang Nyong'o, would travel to Nairobi, the nation's capital, to take part in the twice-weekly rallies Mr. Odinga has called for on Mondays and Thursdays.

They will demonstrate against the high expense of living and what Mr. Odinga refers to as electoral justice following the election of last year.

Mr. Nyong'o claimed that his choice had been reached after discussion with his party.

It's unclear how he plans to carry out the suspension, particularly in the presence of his more fervent followers.

Since the demonstrations started two weeks ago, Kisumu city has experienced some of the most violent incidents. Nationwide, at least three individuals have died, with two of them occurring in Kisumu.

Numerous businesses have stopped operating in the city due to ongoing clashes between the police and demonstrators in the capital and its suburbs.

The demonstrations on Thursday will continue, according to the opposition.
