Liverpool are ready to tie Virgil van Dijk on a five-year deal.

The Champions will soon open talks with the Dutch captain who has been long sidelined due to injury to fully commit his future at Anfield.

The 28-year old has been a key influence to Jurgen Klopp’s squad since his £75m purchase in 2018 as the World’s expensive defender then, making 130 appearances for the Reds before his long term absence.

The centre back sustained a Cruciate ligament injury against Everton in October following a rash tackle by Jordan Pickford in the yard during the 2-2 Merseyside derby.

According to Italian sports journalist, Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are pleased with Van Dijk’s commitment so far and are speaking with his representatives to tie him to a new five-year contract when he fully recovers.

"Liverpool want in the new year to open new talks with the agent of Virgil van Dijk to extend his contract,” Romano said whiles speaking on the CBS Sports' Que Golazo podcast.

"They are so happy with the player, and Van Dijk is so happy with Liverpool, so immediately after his injury they were saying 'OK you are injured, but, you are our leader, so we also want you in the future'

"At the moment he has two more seasons of his contract at Liverpool, but they’re ready to extend for the next five years, so those talks are going to take place in the new year.

"Liverpool will go with Van Dijk in the future, they don’t want to sell him.

"Jurgen Klopp is absolutely a big fan of Van Dijk."

Liverpool won the Champions League last two seasons, Super Cup and are the current holders of the Club World Cup with his influence. The Reds are also the Champions of England after winning their first Premier League trophy since its inception.
