Frank Lampard says Kepa Arrizabalaga is still in his plans despite claims that the goalkeeper will be sidelined following the signing of Edouard Mendy last week.

Kepa was an unused substitute in Saturday’s 3-3 draw with West Bromwich Albion as he watched Willie Caballero conceded three goals in the first half before Chelsea fought to complete a comeback.

The manager has defended that the most expensive goalkeeper has not played his last game for the Blues as speculated, and will always jump to the defence of the 25-year old when needed.

“I think it has been a difficult time for Kepa, that has been well documented, I know it and he knows it, but we should certainly not jump to that conclusion.

“Also I think, which I have felt quite strongly about in the last week, is also understanding Kepa is a young man and the spotlight on him, I think, has become slightly unfair.

“I have to protect him because I know he is a good lad and playing with absolute professionalism and intent to do the best that he can, as all the squad have to.”

Following Kepa’s mistake at Brighton which led to the equalizer and a second-half howler which gave Sadio Mane his second last week against Chelsea, Lampard believes it is time to give the goalkeeper a rest to rebuild his momentum.

The Blues boss confirmed that new signing Edouard Mendy is in contention to make his debut against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
