Lagos state lawmakers deny passing Sharia

Legislators in Nigeria's Lagos State have refuted claims that Sharia law was secretly passed (Islamic law).

It comes in response to allegations made on social media that the bill was passed to help one of the major presidential candidates.

The Lagos House of Assembly stated in a statement that the allegations should be "discarded."

"Lagos enforces its penal code. This makes it easier for the state to establish customary courts rather than Sharia courts "a tweet from the assembly's account read.

Islamic law is followed in 12 of Nigeria's northern, predominately Muslim states. Only Muslims are meant to be subject to the legal system.
