Klopp slams Burnley’s dangerous ‘wrestling’ tactics

Jurgen Klopp has hit out at Burnley’s ‘wrestling’ and called the Premier League for a clampdown on ‘dangerous’ play.
Despite his side’s win, the German was still angry with the Clarets’ physical approach and referee Mike Dean’s failure to penalize them.
Klopp fumed: “Watch wrestling if you like that kind of thing.
“We have to stick to protecting the players. I like all decisions in favour of the offensive team, like offside.
“There’s one message, ‘Let the game flow.
“Nobody knows exactly what it means.

“I am not 100 per cent sure if we are going in the right direction with this. It feels like we are going 10-15 years back. It is too dangerous.
“But in the end, we won and nobody got injured.”
Klopp was particularly angry about the way Burnley strikers Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes buffeted Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip in the air.
“You saw those challenges with Barnes and Wood, Virgil and Joel,” Klopp added.
It is the latest in a series of bust-ups between Klopp and Burnley.
In December 2018, Klopp branded Ben Mee’s tackling ‘dangerous’ after a clean challenge resulted in Joe Gomez suffering a broken leg.
And Klopp had a half-time row with Burnley boss Sean Dyche during January’s 1-0 defeat that ended the Reds 68-game unbeaten home run in the Premier League.
But Dyche accused Dean of awarding too many free-kicks and failing to give a first-half penalty for a Trent Alexander-Arnold challenge on Dwight McNeil.
“There were too many soft fouls.
“And a penalty that’s not given. If it happens in the middle of the field, it’s given.
“Yet for some reason when it’s Burnley, we don’t get them when they are in the box,” Dyche said.
