Killing Of Young Men At Tettegu: Residents Drag Weija Police Divisional Patrol Team To IGP And National Security Minister

Residents of Tettegu, the fishing community in the Greater Accra Region called on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and National Security Minister, Mr Albert Jan Dapaah to call to the order the various police officers from the Weija Police Divisional Patrol Team of the Ghana Police Service.

In a petition to the IGP and National Security Minister which was intercepted by Soireenews. com, the residents noted that on Monday August
21, 2023 around 2:00pm, a police patrol team that they believed to becoming from the Weija division came to chase out some youth in Tetegu township which resulted in the loss of lives of two young men whose name have been withheld.

According to them, those well armed policemen who claimed to be performing patrol duties came chasing some group of people in the Tetegu township and as a result of that, four young men run into the Densu river which runs through Tetegu as a result of fear and panic.

In the process, they stated that two of them were rescued and the other two were left to their fate in the river but got drown and died. Some fishermen formed a rescue team to search for their bodies the next day but no traces.

They pointed out that the two of the young men were arrested and monies were extorted from them before releasing them for no crime committed.

They indicated that one elderly man suffered brutality in the hands of these same policemen and was rushed to hospital for treatment and fortunately on his side he was treated and discharged now recovering.

According to them, the reason for the operation by the police is currently unknown and the youth  the Tetegu township are unhappy about that act.

"We believe the police core mandate is to protect lives and properties but in these case they are rather doing the opposite.

"We believe the Tetegu post have no idea about these act mented by the Weija divisional patrol team," they stated.

They indicated that the two days after their drowning the search team were able to find one body which was removed.

Additionally, they asserted that the next day too the other body was seen and removed. Currently the bodies have been moved to the Police hospital mortuary by the Tetegu police.

"Before then, I personally informed the Weija divisional commander to assist the Tetegu police with a vehicle to convey the bodies to the mortuary knowing that the Tetegu police post has no vehicle.

"Yet he told me that their vehicle have broken down for sometime now but one red pick up with police inscription on it that we know comes from division was used for the operation on Monday 21st August, 2023 at Tetegu. We the residents have to pay for a vehicle before the bodies were sent to the mortuary.

"The angry youth of Tetegu have to convey the bodies in a tricycle, dump it in front of the Tetegu police post and force the police before they sent the bodies to the mortuary," the petition noted.

"What is happening in Ghana police service now, if I may ask.

"What right does the police have to beat a suspect and strip him naked in the clear view of the public?

"Is the divisional commander telling us that there is no service vehicle functioning in the whole division?, they asked in the petition.

We believe the operation was not official and the Divisional command and the District are not aware about it.

The petition noted that they  have also not visited the Tetegu township to tell us anything

The petition stressed that these are few questions the residents are asking and also seeking for justice from the police administration
