Kenyan governor turns away top officials for lateness

After turning away high-ranking officials from a meeting because they arrived minutes later than him, a newly elected governor in Kenya has garnered plaudits for his strict office policies.

Doors were to be closed for anyone arriving after the meeting's scheduled start time of 9:00 local time, according to Governor George Natembeya of Trans-Nzoia County in western Kenya.

Discussion of the county's five-year development plan was the purpose of the meeting with members of the County Executive Committee, the equivalent of cabinet ministers.

"I mean 9 a.m. sharp, not 9:01 a.m. when I say we meet at 9 a.m. sharp. Everyone needs to learn to keep time because I am five minutes early. If you are outside after the specified time, stay there, Mr. Natembeya is cited as saying by regional media.
